Bought this recently in Carver, OR. It says R.W. Roundtree & Bro on the lock. I was thinking it is leather. I saw another one that was like it on here. How can I get the warping out.

colleen566, do you have more pictures of this trunk? I can't really tell if this is made of leather of vulcanized fiber. As far as getting the warping out, I've never had any luck with that. Nice looking trunk though.

Typo: Meant to say made of leather OR vulcanized fiber.

I am with jscott on this -- and would say high probability of vulcanized fiber -- given the style and era of manufacture. Easy enough to mistake them for leather as I often see them mislabeled for sale.

I will send more pictures. I can get a close up of the fabric. I dont see any fabric between the material and the wood. Will see if I can get more info off of it. So far I found just the R.W. Roundtree and Bro on the lock and Yale Lock Co.
Thank you so much for your comments :)

Thanks Drill. They show the picture but cant get any info off of it. I found a purchase order from R.W. Roundtree on line that described a trunk as "rubber" trunk. I cant get the other pictures to download.

      If you goggle: http://www.rountreesluggage.com

As for the Rubber trunk that, India rubber would be combined with fibre
and paper machete. then coated in varnish. this was the exterior covering,
used at one time.A tough durable surface.

This is the patent process for how to manufacture an India rubber trunk.

I have shined it up. Looks good. Can't figure out how to upload photos. I belive Rountree used vulcanized rubber between 1920 and 1940. I have number 1058 off Yale lock.
