I like this vase not just because of how it looks but also how it has been made.
The top of this vase has been cold cut which is very rare for a Japanese vase and when I looked closely I worked out why. The pontil was attached at the neck end and the form blown from there. The vase has then been moulded to make the ribbed effect, pinched for the neck, and then the pontil break has been cut off to make the neck opening. Ingenious.
I'm sure neck end pontil vases have been made before so if anyone knows what this technique is called please let me know.
The cut end clearly shows the glass layers. I love the bulbous shape of the vase and it's gathered purse like neck.
The sticker roughly translates to handmade. I believe this vase is from Tsugaru Vidro.
