Well, 'Mikes' thrift store isn't a thrift store of choice for some folks....the floors are god awfully dirty, there is stuff laying randomly everywhere in the isles. A sometimes overpowering stench of urine greets you at the door.........he's a very nice old man though. I'm allowed to dig just about anywhere in there including his 'incoming' donations, boxes, etc. I've found some nice stuff there in the past, and today. Nearing the bottom of a box, I found this. He treats me very fairly. 50 cents for this Bermuda beauty. I believe it's likely a napkin ring but can not say for sure . It has a rather small 1&3/8th" i.d., and is 3/4" tall. Curfew was at 18:00 hrs in this era. I think the guys had to be off the streets by then, and likely the smell of chow drew them back to their base or ship. Maybe a marine carved this into a plain wood ring at the time? Or perhaps a Christmas dinner party item for the boys.

What an interesting object. Mike's Thrift Store is definitely a place for me! Some of the best treasures are found in dingy, dusty shops.

1944. Bermuda saw Juniperus bermudiana, the Bermuda cedar, start to die at an alarming rate due to two species of insect. The oyster-shell scale found in the East End and the juniper scale found in Paget had been introduced accidentally in 1943, and cedars were dying throughout the island. (The Bermuda Cedar Blight would claim more than three million trees, and by 1971, 99 percent of cedars had been eradicated by the invasive species).
