While on vacation, my daughter spotted this pin in an antique shop & purchased it for me. She knew it was civil war related, but the store owner had no additional information. I researched it and was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was patented on March 23, 1880 by E. A. Bliss as a Lace-Pin. I obtained copies the United States Patent Office paperwork & had everything framed. Apparently, the pin was available in two designs.
Rifles appear to be Rolling-Block.
blunderbuss, your observation is a good one since production years are correct.

The Remington Rolling Block rifle was a breech-loading rifle produced from the mid-1860s into the early 20th century by E. Remington and Sons (later Remington Arms Company). The action was extremely strong, and could easily withstand the increased pressure of the new smokeless powders coming into use by the late 1880s.
