Sign hunting is a great hobby, but requires a lot of work after the "Find". We bought this Phillips sign from a Picker friend in Dillon Montana and then found the pole a couple of hundred miles North. It finally all combined and we stood it up at aaaLakeside Storage in Provo, after putting in a 7' deep footing. As I always say: The fun is in the hunt. This won't be finished until Spring when we can paint the pole correctly.

What type of bolts do you use in your footings? And how deep and wide do you make them?

I used to be in the Billboard Sign buz & built the big signs. For these we dig a 2'x2' x2' hole with a backhoe and then dig with an auger two 12" holes within the "box" another 5' deep, making the total about 7' deep. We build a rebar box with 1" all thread welded to the rebar to fit the base of the sign. We then put 2 rebar rods to the bottom of each hole and fill with concrete. Let dry 10 days or more and stand the sign. It's a pain!

That's a 36 sq ft sail up in the air 18' above ground. I'd hate to see one blow down so we do go a little heavy on the footings. We had a 60' tall 14'x48' Billboard sign blow down last year because the nuts were not tight and eventually loosened with time until they stripped off!!!! Not a pretty sight! No one hurt but it did hit the corner of a house! Don't want a repeat of that with these beauties.
Yikes I understand why you went overkill, around here they do a 4x4 footer and fill it with concrete and L bolts and one guy uses a polymer bolt. Is it real windy in UTAH?
