The first photo is the ornate top. The second and third show how massive the handles are. I made these identical to the ones that were on the trunk. They measure over .450 thick and they are shown next to a typical handle being sold today in many places. The last photo shows a unique feature of this trunk, a tray stay. It is nothing more than a tray hook attached to the bottom of the tray with a piece of woven cloth (just like a lid stay), and goes into a hold that was punched into the valance. Romadka Bros actually patented something just like this (maybe this is their patent) on Aug 24 1875, patent # 167024. I have a copy of the patent, but when I looked for the patent again to post a link, I could not find it.
Wonderful trunk, Thanks for the post Jim , This now explains the hole in the Valance on one of my Romadka trunks in a similar location. Could never figure out why it was there. Love the center band hardware (Taylor patent I believe). You don't see that to often. Secret compartments are a cool find as well.
Knock-down beautiful!
