I just completed this small leather stagecoach trunk. It's made of 90% leather and in very fine condition for its' age. Check out the fine leather tooling on the top. This would be from around the 1860 period or possibly older.
This trunk is nearly 100% complete, with the exception of the leather dust flap that strapped down over the lock during travel. Unfortunately, those are most always missing. Both handles are in beautiful condition.
The lock is complete, with the exception of the missing key. Even the brass key hole cover is fully intact. The interior is 100% complete. All of the fabric lining and drop down compartment is intact.
While cleaning this one, I discovered that the name and address of the original owner is still etched into the leather on one end. It appears to be:
E.F. DULLON
NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT .
I try to imagine the person who owned this and the hard travels this has seen. I can't even imagine us having to travel that way today.

OK does it mean anything or just decoration.
I'm not really sure. It could just be a trademark of the trunk maker.

As a non-trunky I am always amazed by everyone's trunks and, like you, think of the stories they could tell.
In Australia this trunk might have seen a bushranger....

Bushrangers were Australian outlaws who held up coaches.
Prevalent in the mid 1800s, particularly in gold mining areas.
