I purchased my first zinc covered trunk over the weekend, it is 20 wide and 19 tall. I'm running out of room but there is always room for a small trunk to fit in someplace. For the age it is in nice condition, the exterior only needs a little cleaning up, interior I have to remove the old paper and make a tray. It originally had fabric lid stay so will replace with fabric rather than adding a metal one.
In looking at other CW posts for zinc trunks I've read that you use a lemon to clean the zinc. Once it is cleaned should I coat it with something or leave it alone?
Interesting latches on this one, under the latch is a small piece of metal that you move and it unlocks the latch. This is my first trunk with this style of latch.
Hi KathyKay -- the lemon was only somewhat effective in cleaning but that combined with fine steel wool -- got a really nice sheen out of mine. Super nice small zinc trunk you found... and yes there is always room somewhere for these!
ps. I would not clear coat it -- mine seems to have weathered fine once shinned up!
trunkman - thanks for the cleaning tips. I hope to start work on it this week, will post pictures when I'm done.
KathyKay, I love this zinc trunk. I really like the latches on this one. I'm still looking for a zinc trunk and have yet to come by one in my area. Can't wait to see you work your magic on this one. I'm certain it will be spectacular looking!!
jscott thanks for the kind words. Each trunk I work on I learn something new. I love viewing the restored trunks that others post to CW, they give me inspiration and the desire to do better. I will never get to the level that some folks are at but I have fun trying.
KathyKay, Don't slight yourself here!! Your trunks are among the best on CW. You are an artist and it shows thru on all of your wonderful trunks. It's always a treat to see what you'll post next.
