One of my favorite ceramic pieces, a rummage market find this past summer. I recently lived in southern Turkey for a few years and greatly admire their pottery/ceramics. I lived in a "tourist trap" town, and would ride my bike to the town center to watch the tourists, lol! I think this is an older piece, as it has a triangle shaped impressed mark. Could I find this porcelain mark on the web? Of course not! I couldn't make out the mark so sent a photo of it to one of my Turkish friends - bingo!
Diameter is 12 inches. That bit on the rim that looks like a chip, isn't. It's glazed. Maybe where the potter's thumb rested...
As always, thanks for looking!
Efesgirl, what a lucky find indeed!! This is really GREAT!!!
Thanks, jscott! It certainly was a lucky find. There it was, lying on a table, unloved and unwanted...but not anymore! :-) I just wish I could somehow find out it's approximate age. No luck so far.
Very nice piece :)..isn't it great to know people from other countries that read and write the language. I used to take all my Asian pieces to my friend at my favorite Chinese buffet. Tony would read marks for me and translate just about any text on paintings and scrolls that I found. Sadly he had to close the buffet and I lost track of him. He probably went back to China where most of his family still lives.
Mike - yes, it definitely comes in handy! I don't have problems with Dutch, Flemish or German. I can read Turkish recipes and info on food packets, but not regular news articles. I can't carry on a conversation, either. I wasn't familiar with the pottery so had to break down and ask my friend. :-)
Hi,
Were you able to figure out the first word in the triangle? I just found 5 of these plates and is trying to make it out.
