This is an American toy of an American Co Playskool , the Pullman Railroad Car. Designed by a preschool teacher in the late 1920s and made around 1930Playskool was founded by a former Milwaukee schoolteacher, Lucille King, in the 1920s. King apparently had abandoned her teaching career and was working at the John Schroeder Lumber Company in Milwaukee when she came up with the idea for Playskool toys., the Playskool Pullman was reportedly only manufactured for a very brief time, perhaps only a year, before the Great Depression put a stop to the toy's production. It was designed to resemble both a Pullman train car and a little suitcase. The leather handle made it easy to carry on a real train trip.
1938 Playskool Pullman Sleep Dolly Sleep Dollhouse. It is a toy train dollhouse, made of metal, that unfolds into a section of a pullman car with opposing seats, folding table, upper berth and porter's closet. It will snap closed to be stored or carried. It is painted a Pennsylvania sort of tuscan color- burgundy with the logo "Sleep Dolly Sleep" and "Playskool" in gold. Inside the compartment it has green cushions for the seats - 2 sets of 3 each. 2 green mattresses for making up the beds as well as 2 sheets, 2 blankets, and 2 pillows. There are 2 green pieces of a cardboard type material to cover the windows. To cover the compartment there are 2 green curtains.
Pullman invented the sleep cars on trains . Often found missing pieces and very scratched up . Mine has one minor scratch . I did have to replace handle as most the leather broke and rarely found with a original carry handle . It has a piece of leather that that snaps it shut that is original . The boy bisque doll is missing his girl so I gave him a teddy bear. The closet had a option to buy a porcelain toilet or used to store blankets and mattress's . This is a desired piece by a variety of collectors from dolls to train collectors . My camera is acting up hope photo's are clear enough to see this rare toy which was very expensive to produce and costly new , The depression and low sales made it only available a short time most documentation believe about a year on market. Measures 9 1/2"x 11 1/2"x 5 . Another Milwaukee based Toy :-)

So delightful..great post Mani! xoxo
Mani, I just had to comment on this again. I'm just fascinated with this. I've searched the web and found only one other. But, it's nowhere near the nice condition of yours (and VERY expensive!!!). This is just wonderful!!!
What a fantastic collectible Mani! Wonderful condition, and I wouldn't think the handle would detract from its value. I'm sure the leather on most of them would have dried up and deteriorated over time.
Thank you Rick :-) I did replace it and I think your right the ones I have seen all handles are gone the leather dried up. Many thanks for stopping to make a nice comment :-)
Thank you inky !! Glad you stopped always happy to see you xoxo

Merry Christmas Manikin! Have you been a good girl? What a nice piece of history you have here. Here in Brazil the sleeping cars are still known as Pullmann cars too. I never suspected why..."vagão Pullman" in Portuguese.
Big Hugs Mani and wish you and Doc a Happy New Years xoxo
Love, love, love it!
Thank you Celiene so glad you stopped and made such a nice comment :-)
LOL - is that Paddington Bear, I wonder? The little boy looks so surprised to see him!
lol Celiene I guess he does look ready to defend himself from bear :-) My Friend is a Teddy Bear artist and can make these tiny mohair bears so well and also large ones . He is able to make them look like a antique bear with finest detail so I let him ride along on the train :-)
Thank you brunswick :-)

Wonderful!
I have the Pullman Car toy that belonged to my mother - and that I remember carefully playing with when we visited my grandparents. I'm so happy to know others who love theirs as much as I do mine and to see that all the contents are original. The only thing I'm missing are the dolls, something I'm hoping to find soon.
