Hi everyone. Im new here and love this site. Picked up this trunk recently off Craigslist and a few others i will post. Just started to clean her up and thought the color was black the whole time. She had so much tar and dirt but her true colors are starting to show. Still not done cleaning her but have stopped until i can find out more info. Measurements are 32" wide, 13" height, 12" depth. Not sure about the 1745 carved into front. I dont believe this trunk is that old but thought the date had significance. The lock was missing so that's a bummer. Been doing research on this and not able to find out anything on this. I love the notches in the wood and have seen similar notches on a few trunks and all were European orgin but again nothing i could date or match this too. I thought these notches were unique and beautiful and were the reason i bought this trunk. I took some photos and found something i thought might help but dont know. In the photo of the hinge on the top left of hinge between the 1st and 2nd screw when you zoom in there is a little drawing or makers mark. Like i said would love to find out any info i can on this. What type of wood, etc. Sorry about photo quality. Going to take new photos. Not sure if this real, fake or what it is. Thanks again

Appears to be a marriage chest. They had one similar to this on The Antique Roadshow and imagine their site should have a link.

Yes that is a chest and not a trunk. Check the hardware and the views like the underside to see if it is real or repro.

The makers mark appears to be a carpenters hand saw.
      Which is neat.
I always tend to ask the questions- What tool was used to make
the grooves? What technique was used? Were they hand gouges or rotary?
Are they uniform in distance and depth.
I do many hand burnings in a lot of wood,
you can tell when things are done by hand
as opposed to machine.Old lumber cracks,
it checks with changes in temperature over the
years. Is this what you see?Caution, Many people look to
make things older than they are? I question Why?
much luck with the chest thanks for the post.
