This came from the stall of a woman I buy from on a regular basis. The soaps also came from her. The body and beak are what I imagine is cow horn. I thought it was interesting that there are wooden pegs placed through the horn. Not sure what purpose that serves. I wondered if there were wings attached, but the tiny dowels are flush with the body and it doesn't look as though anything is missing.
The head/ neck is screwed on and is removable.
Age? Not a clue....
I cleaned Plucky Duckie up she looks much better now. I must find her some new eyes, though. I imagine there were glass eyes, but if anyone knows better then please speak up.

Really like your duck..so much nicer than a lot of horn stuff that you can get..he is a beauty!..:-)
@inky - I always see those Scrimshaw type carved horns, but this is something completely different. I looked closely at the wooden dowel pegs and did not see any evidence of anything missing, so I am figuring that this is how it looked originally. A pair of eyes would greatly improve it, however!

Swan, no? She's an interesting find, for sure. I'd guess artisan, be very hard to find out any information unless s/he made a lot of them. I love folk art! :)

katherine - I guess it's a duck, although the neck is a bit on the long side. I have two rainbow crystals that I am going to try on for size and see if I can give her some pretty eyes!
Very cool bird Bonny, and I'm sure a great conversation piece... I wonder if the plugs were placed to cover holes drilled to prevent the spread of what appear to be cracks below each peg.
Hey there Rick55 - I looked at the marks through a loop and they aren't cracks. I think whoever made this bird marked those spots so they would get the dowels in the right place. There are no marks on the other side. I still have to find that poor bird some eyes! :-)
I don't see a duck there, my dear, perhaps some other type of water bird?
