i can't believe how beautiful this piece is! it's so gorgeous - those birds! and even the handles and the white part. there are traces of gold gilding around the rim, but mostly worn away. can anyone tell me where this is from or anything about it? is this Imari porcelain?
That looks like pottery, not porcelain.
The handles were added after the pot was fashioned. A combination of transfer print and hand painting. Those small cracks on the base look like firing cracks. That would look great with a brightly colored, flowering plant in it. :-)
thanks Efes. it's made out of whatever toilets are made of - very heavy and strong - hence no chips. regardless of it's age or value, it's an incredibly strong and beautiful jardinere - in my opinion.
Pretty cool Ho2...since you mention toilet bowls (vitreous china) maybe it's a Chinese chamber pot...:)
OK - toilets are made from porcelain, but I wonder about the rings on the bottom.
thanks mikelv85 and Efes! what do you think the rings are Efes? they really are difficult to see - only w/ the light sharply angled.
this pot is sooo heavy for it's size.
Can you feel any ripples on the inside? Jardinieres are normally big, heavy pots. I didn't find this particular design in Google Images.
rucklcz, thanks for confirming.
hi rucklcz! i always love to get your opinion, even if i don't always agree! which is the case here. that grainy dark surface is from spray paint that had gotten on it at some point in it's life. there was a lot of different colored paints on it and i've been slowly cleaning it. i'm pretty certain that it's porcelain. it has that ring to it too. Efes - i can't feel any ripples on the inside of it at all.
Fabulous handles....:-)
thank you inky!
i think that this piece might be British after all!
Here are examples of Imari porcelain jardinieres:

Yours looks to be loosely modeled after this fish bowl:

Thank you Efes! i have determined that this bowl is not Asian, but from great britain or it's continental. it's pretty old too. interestingly, someone on fb told me that they can tell it's european and not asian by the way the birds are chattering to one another.
i think it's british versions of Chinese work. i saw some very similar birds on some Spode pieces.
