I have a question about my new small (2.5 x 4") basket (probably Penobscott, mid 1900s but I will try to date the tag more precisely) purchased from Ebay for a cheap $10. I am doing research on Bruce Poolaw so bought this mainly for the store tag. But I wonder if this is 2 different baskets: a brown split ash bottom and perhaps a newer lid made from sweetgrass. With the lid removed its clear that the materials have darkened with light and age but the lid looks just too new...any ideas? Just wondering.

I would say that the lid does not belong to the rest of the basket. It doesn't look right.

interestingly the lid fits almost as though they belonged together, but the materials don't match and I suspect the ages are different...somewhere there is another basket with a mismatched lid wishing it could be reunited with its original elements as well

Yeah, no that is not right. You will see this from time to time on Ebay, a seller has a couple baskets that are damaged in different places. So, in the hope of profit they will smash two halves together and hope for the best.
