I received this whistle from my grandmother. My great grandmother, her mother, gave it to her. It was hung next to the wall corded telephone for prank calls in the middle of the night. She would blow the whistle into the phone at the crank caller. Lol. I know it is at least 30 years old... Was wondering if anyone had any idea as to its actual age? It is all original, with the original cork ball inside the whistle. The whistle itself is made in England, and is called the Acme Thunderer. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you all.

The whistle isn't terribly old and is quite common. They were really popular during the 1960's. We still have the same whistle. My sister in law and my wife both used it coaching girls basketball. I waited to post until I got ours out to compare it.

That's really cool to know. I kind of figured they were rather popular because lots of people had them when I was younger. I think it's kind of cool but I still have it that's all.

My big question is how they make them to be so very very very very loud!? Even crank callers nowadays couldn't stand the sound of this whistle. Lol

Its the pea in a whistle that produces the intense sound

Girl Guides, Teachers, Coaches, and a great many others including train guards would have a whistle.

Perhaps the peas make the sound 'trill' and the angle edge where the air leaves the windows creates the sound. The body of the whistle affects the pitch, notes etc.
