I have found it tricky to photograph this Kurata bowl/ashtray.
Believe me it is much better than I can show!
It has an interesting decor and that Japanese way of incorporating bold with subtle.
Made with black glass, blue cased interior and then a clear case over that.
The exterior of the clear case has been given a gorgeous mother of pearl finish, almost an oil slick look.
As you can see the finish has not been applied on the external ribs so the black glass shows through.
I am constantly surprised at the work that has come from Kurata.
The designers and artisans there were clearly given a degree of freedom to create that has resulted in such a skilful and varied output.
Diameter: 20cm (8in)
That really is an interesting series of techniques !!!!
It's got an enamel look to it: the ribs/bands ... the turquoise interior ...
Love its design.
It does look like an enamel piece doesn't it Kevin! Thanks.
Ta Capering one.
Nice
That's great you have the box for this. I see that a lot.
I guess Ash trays were big back in the 50s and 60s, but I don't see many anymore
1960s I see
Thanks for dropping by and commenting Gruff.
I am a bit blahh about the idea of ashtrays....we normally call them bowls these days LOL!
My pleasure.
Ashtrays are faux pa these days.Certainly not back then.

BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL
NB thanks for enjoying my glass.
You have probably worked out Japanese glass is my thing, and Kurata are a big favourite.
You have so many beautiful pieces, not only Japanese but EVERYTHING! And your pictures, too, BEAUTIFUL!
