A friend of mine found this antique item when renovating a house. The long arms seem to be some sort of handle, and they can be pulled down toward the floor. The rectangular box in the center of the photo moves diagonally as the long arms are pulled down. In the interior of the rectangular box, the wood has been carved to make three open, rectangular compartments that are roughly 3" by 2" each (see orange lines in second photo). When the two-part thin arm along the side of the machine moves, it turns the round section at the base of the machine. The edges of the circular section are lined in ridged metal. See blue arrows & lines in second photo for each piece's range of motion.
My friend has shown pictures of this item to various antique dealers and friends, but to no avail - no one seems to know what the item's title or purpose is. If you have any ideas, please share!
The way it appears to move I would have called it an antique hand crank pull down printing press.
Maybe for pressing the lid into a barrel-like container? I do know what that other thing is though..its a computer monitor!!
