So I stood at the doorway of one of the bedrooms last night and looked at the sea of art glass I'd gotten out to photograph.
Did I want to post one of the Scandinavian pieces? Kosta? Hadeland? Orrefors? Then I realized I couldn't get my mind off this unidentified piece.
It looks like someone managed to capture the exact moment when the spill of water hit a surface, splashed...and suddenly turned solid.
Other than a vague (and probably incorrect) reference to Venini in an old (sold) listing on 1stdibs.com, I've found nothing like this.
Thanks for looking! Brett
Wow Brett, that is absolutely incredible looking!! I'm not a glass collector, but this is just amazing to me!
Could well be Venini. It takes skill to make a solid piece of glass to have that much movement and life.
If it was huge I might be thinking along the lines of Vannes, Cofrac et al, France.
Thanks, Scott! The first picture kind of hints at it but I couldn't quite capture the tinge of color it has in person - sort of that pale, glowing greenish-blue you see on icebergs. I've been keeping it on my desk at work so I can look at it during the day. : )
Thanks for the love and the comment, Karen. Really the only reason I lean away from Venini is because even though I think it's beautiful, the finished piece seems more like a happy accident. It absolutely took skill to do the work but I can't quite shake the feeling that it was an experiment that happened to turn out really well.
It does remind me of Vannes and Cofrac pieces but they all seem to have an actual form to them even when they're pretty flamboyant. This just seems...exuberant and less designed, if that makes sense.
Of course, I could be completely wrong about all of it. I'm okay with that! : )
Thanks much for the love, Kevin, efesgirl and aura!
Thanks for the love, Peggy and Caper!
I love the organic form Swfin! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Rick! It's like my own little desktop ocean wave. All my lunchtime Goodwill purchases seem to spend a little time in the office but this is the one that's gotten the most attention. : )
very beautiful!!!
Thanks, Sean!
Thanks for the love, fixitjmc!
Thanks, OGF!
Thanks, Emme and mike!
What are the dimensions? Third pic in makes me think that this is a votive holder. Can you post it in color and on a white background? It looks orrefors-ish by the quality of the glass.
@Emme - it's about 20cm/8 in across by about 12cm/4.75 in tall. I uploaded all my photos to the cloud before wiping my phone a few weeks ago and there they still sit. I'll see if I can get a decent shot on a different background.
You're right that the glass quality is similar to Orrefors but the form itself is about as freeform as you could possibly get. : )
Someone has a similar item posted on eBay right now:
