I went to a near town to go digging, then later a beach clean-up, and found two silver coins buried in a pile of glass and dirt.
First I found was a 80% silver 1958 Canadian quarter, then later a 90% silver 1943 American dime.
Boiling hydrogen peroxide 3 times per side and Lime Away for a few hours per side, along with gentle rinses in warm water and a Q-tip, and we have readable coins (don't do this to valuable coins. These aren't worth much and were too crappy to display as dug.)
Baking soda to shine up the silver worth little more than its spot price, and we have beautiful displayable pieces to now give me my third and fourth silver coins without a metal detector.
Copper never turns out right.
I usually dig for bottles but have dug coins back to the 1860s by just keeping an eye out for shape.
