This is a very well made leather case-approx. 10.75" long x 3.5" wide. It is approx. 1.5" thick and the bottom half bellows. Its hinged with brass. Looks to all be hand made..When opened, the upper half houses a kind of springed clip, which seems to be ivory, not bakelite and is held in place by a brass "key" of sorts, serving to hold the clip in place when not being used-and serves another unknown-to me-purpose. The bottom half of the case has two ribbons. A black ribbon, 37" long, and a white ribbon, 34" long. The white ribbon has U.S.S. Montana printed on it..
I know about the WW1 Montana, and the Montana class of battleship during WW2, never to see production..After some research-and many theories..Nothing..Please help.

It seems femgineered given the fact it has flowers on the box. Just a guess that they are hair stylists tools. Maybe for ribbon work?

USS Montana (ACR-13), launched Dec15 1906, and was sponsored by a Miss Minnie Conrad. I was trying to piece something together for you.

Maybe the 'pliers' opened up an area on clothing or another fabric item, and the hook was used to draw the ribbon through. The hooking area of the hook appears about the same width as the ribbon. Good luck Cairo. Thanks for sharing your interesting item.

Ladies' button hook and glove stretcher!
      Here's a different example:

The ribbon looks like a sailor's cap tally - but I didn't know they also came in white

      Here is a closer example:

      http://www.rhodonscollectables.co.uk/ourshop/prod_3320903-Antique-Ladies-Glove-Stretchers-Ivory-Coloured.html

The gloves would have a button at the wrist that required the little hook that also served to hold the tool in place.

I do think both ribbons are Navy cap tallys - perhaps the beau of the lady? I always wonder how different types of things get stored together. I'm also a bit of a romantic.
