I found this piece at Goodwill yesterday. It's 9 inches tall by a little over 6 inches wide. The bottom was covered in gunk which was difficult to remove. Now i can see a signature - something like 'tualuk 84'. does anyone recognize it? the clay looks like it's from England, but could be from anywhere, i guess...?

thank you vetraio50. i like it too. it may be '54, instead of '84. sometimes it looks like a perfect '54, but then it changes, depending on what angle i look at it from.

i think that the signature says 'turlock 54'. what do you think?

Turlock, CA is a place where a fair amount of pottery is made. do you think that this could be just a note to distinguish it? the clay looks very unusual for a California piece, i think. it's a very fine, deep brown clay.

And to add another layer of confusion (or just coincidence), the word 'turluk' is also associated with a type of clay construction. I think it was clay layered over a framework of a wicker-like material. I assumed it was only related to housing construction but I'm not sure about that.

this piece should look familiar to a couple of you!
    12. billretirecoll billretirecoll, 8 years ago
wow ho2cultcha, you're right very familiar! LOL the clay used is similar to the California Faience art pottery from Berkeley, Ca. made in the 1920s and 30s, but if these are date marks on the four pieces that we have, between bratjdd, you and I, these are from the 1960s to 1980s. seeing all of them now, means someone should have an idea of who the artist is. I think bratjdd is in SF, Ca., I got both of mine in Concord, Ca., and you're in Oakland, Ca. right. so there's a good chance that they were made somewhere in the Bay Area. I think we'll find out soon. :^)
