I picked this today at the thrift store, there where some rocks in it. This seems to have lots of age, I think Mexican but could be wrong. Maybe Native American too or Taos pottery, I have so much going on in my brain, it's hard for me to know some things.
Interesting that it's signed.
Hi Efesgirl, getting closer to a new year and hope you are doing fine.
It's Maricopa, or Pima, from southern Arizona. Two separate, independent tribes and cultures, but their pottery looks virtually identical. Since the Maricopa had two "revivals" of making pottery, and Pima pottery pretty much died out, this type of pottery is generally referred to as Maricopa.
The three time periods when it was made was roughly 1880s-1910, and the two revivals in 1937-1940, and the 1970s. Most made in the 1970s was signed, but I wouldn't call this a signature on this pot. The signatures were written with the same black slip used to decorate the pot, before it was fired. This looks like some sort of notation, probably put on by a shop, or an owner.
