This piece has been in my mother-in-law's living room for years, used as an end table. Anyone have any idea what it actually was made to be used for?

Celiene, I've tried, and tried to get you to go back and look at the silver tube-like piece you put up here some time ago. But I keep missing you, and vice versa. It could have held a telephone but just as likely just for your muffin and coffee to sit on the top.
