Colonial immigrant trunk/chest

I have owned this chest for quite a few years now, at the moment it is full of my 4 year old's toys! My Wife and I love the chest and often have chats about its age and country of origin. I think it is European and my wife thinks it could be American. I have done a little searching on the web but similar items dates vary wildly from early 18th C to 20th C. If anybody could shed some light on this we would be grateful. Thank you in advance and apologies for the poor photos!
