    Hello CW friends!!!!!

Here is my Searles & Edge tooled leather covered hat trunk. I've been trying to buy this trunk for the last 4 years. Yes, the last 4 years!!! It belonged to my cousin Donnie who incidentally was the person responsible for getting me hooked on trunks in the first place.

Unfortunately, my dear cousin Donnie passed away recently. His wife Joy decided to sell this trunk to me since I was Donnie's trunking buddy.

It's made by Searles & Edge , No. 24 Main Street, Lexington, KY. I believe this one was made around the 1850 period, based on the lock and all the style of the thick brass buttons. I have no further information on this trunk maker other than that.

The trunk is covered in heavily tooled leather and highly decorated with heavy brass buttons. I love the deep tooled leather pattern that is on all sides of this trunk. For it's age, it's still in fairly nice condition and it still has it's original key and the lock works great!!

Though the handle is broken and missing, it's still quite a beautiful trunk and I feel honored to own it now. Especially knowing the last owner so very well. I'm certain that Donnie would approve of me having this one in my possession now. It'll be well taken care of for certain!!

I'll show the interior in my next post.

Thanks for stopping by and having a look!!

    Scott

Oh - I saw your other post first! You already had the address! I'm surprised there are no newspaper advertising for them. Maybe all the old archived papers burned at one point.
    6. Celiene Celiene, 9 years ago
Yeah - that is a really special trunk! Beautiful tooling.

Great trunk Scott and nice story about it. .....glad it's with you now.
Imagine how good the hat would have to be to fit with this.

      Celiene,
I'm still searching for information on this trunk maker. Lexington, KY is about an hour from me. So, I may find out something there. Thanks so much for the wonderful comments! So very much appreciated!!!

    14. jscott0363 jscott0363, 9 years ago
Well, Thank you Jean!!! All I had to do to this one was saddle soap it and condition the leather with mink oil. So, I can't take credit for doing anything to this one. Thanks for the love and for stopping by. Always very truly appreciated!!!

      Drill,
Thanks so much!! He would always kid around with me say he might just up and surprise me one day and sell this to me. But, his illness was very short and he never had the opportunity.

      Rick,
Thanks so very much!! Yes, I think he knows it's in good hands. He always kept his tobacco in this trunk. It still has the tobacco smell and a few crumbs of tobacco still remain. Not to mention lot's of good memories of this fine gentleman!!! He left behind a house full of incredible trunks, including a huge Jenny Lind that is amazing looking! His wife is slowly beginning to part with a lot of the trunks. Thanks for the love and for stopping by. Always very truly appreciated!!!

Just curious Scott,When you say huge Jenny Lind, I wonder what the dimensions would be?Especially the length. 28 , 30, 32 but 34 I believe to be the max ,Years ago I saw a large Brown embossed leather covered (In Bad shape) one. Listed on C/L up in Vermont claiming to be 36" When I tried to contact the person to purchase it the post was deleted. I have always been interested in finding a larger one, as it would be an anomaly at the 36" size. I Wonder.........?
    25. jscott0363 jscott0363, 9 years ago
      Drill,
I don't have the measurements, but I'd say it's a 32' or 34" anyway. It was once leather covered, but someone has done a really nice job of removing the leather and refinishing the wood. I don't remember if it has 4 or 5 bands. It has it's original handles and complete original interior. Donnie bought it just the way it is and never did a thing to this one the whole time he was living. In my personal opinion, it's a really nice one. I'd love to have it, but Fran has dared me to buy it as we just have no more room for it. I can put you in touch with Joy and she can tell you more about it. Email me and I'll give you her phone number.

The largest Jenny Lind I've run across is 32 inches. I have two that size, both have five brass bands. One I've had for over 20 years, kids and pets have marked it up over the years, it is time to sand and do some work on it.
    27. jscott0363 jscott0363, 9 years ago
      KathyKay,
I'd love to see that one. Especially after you've worked you KathyKay magic on it!
    28. Drill Drill, 9 years ago
Love the smell of good tobacco .Thanks Scott for the info , but you will get that Jenny too,Fran will bend, and you will somehow make room. That's what tends to happens in these marriages where one person has a trunk fetish. The next thing you know your on an episode of "The Hoarders" trying to get professional help.Fran pulling her hair out and you saying words like"Honey it's sooooo nice just one more."
Besides the one I saw listed had Eight steel bands, from the photo next to a wheel barrel it was quite large, I'll stay on the lookout as it would be unbelievably " rare"
in that size. I too would like to see that one KathyKay,as you have some wonderful
      items.
    29. jscott0363 jscott0363, 9 years ago
      Drill,
That's pretty funny!!! Yep, you're right, I'll probably wind up with that Jenny Lind as well. Fran seems to bend fairly easily. Besides, I've sold 3 trunks within the past month and two more are already marked for a lady that's coming next wek to pick up, so more room has became available. I just need to convince her that we really need a new Jenny Lind in my collection:)

Missed this little gem somehow along the way -- such a beautiful piece with the tooling and brass studs. Just an all around fabulous piece js.

      trunkman,
Thanks very much!! This one has a lot of sentimental value and will passed on down to my sons one day. Thanks also for the appreciation and for stopping by. Very much appreciated!!!
    36. trunkman trunkman, 8 years ago
Funny little story about passing down trunks -- I have three sons and I hope they will all want at least one of my rare trunks along the way -- so I asked my eldest a while back which one he would want out of curiosity -- so he says he would like the flat-top in my office. Now the one he referred to is an early curbside pick I refinished -- just a small common steamer from around 1910 -- certainly not one of my collectables -- so I asked him why that one. His response was the he remembered playing with his toy cars on it probably when he was around 5 0r 6 years old. Sentiment is always the higher value.
    37. trunkman trunkman, 8 years ago
Further along that conversation I asked my middle son which one he would want and his response was immediate -- I will take the Loius Vuitton -- why? I asked. Because it worth the most!
    38. jscott0363 jscott0363, 8 years ago
Smiling!! Your middle son is a very wise young man! It's great that your eldest son has a nice memory attached to that flat top in your office. My sons are 19 and 21. Neither of them have any interest whatsoever in trunks or trunk collecting, but they've both chosen the trunks they'd like to have one day. The trunks happen to be the round top canvas covered trunks that were parked at the foot of their beds in the bedrooms they slept in for all the years they lived at home. Like your eldest son, just sentimental value only. Thanks very much for sharing. I love to hear stories like these.
