Hi! This is the trunk that sat at the end of the hall at my grandma's house for as long as I can remember. I love this trunk but I've always wondered how old and where it came from.

It only has one remaining leather handle and unfortunately I don't have the key. It does have the inner shelf and is fully lined. I also love the portrait on the inside lid! Why were pictures added to the inside of trunks? There are also old metal wheels on the bottom of the trunk.

    Thanks!

This lovely trunk was made around the mid to late 1890's. Without a maker's label its hard to know where it originated... just so much makers making these at the time throughout the country. I will say that the exterior is unusual -- is it covered with painted tin? Don't recall seeing tin painted in this manner -- unique! The lithographs on the interior where for pure aesthetic purposes... just a nice picture to greet you when you opened it up. Nice example of a dome-top trunk in great shape.

Thank you trunkman! The outside isn't tin but looks like a painted threaded textile.

Does the covering feel thin like canvas or thicker in texture like carpet? Either way this is a rare type of covering for a trunk. I would think it is carpet covered --
