My first love, American art pottery resurfaced big time when I saw this piece at Salvation this morning. A great example of an Arts and Craft style hand made vase. It stands 14 1/2 " tall and measures 8" across the handles. It weighs in at a good 5 lbs. very heavy for it's size. This is one of the indicators for American art pottery. Asian copies tend to be much lighter. The beautiful cobalt blue glaze has drips of turquoise and sea green around the collar and down the sides. The two handles each have a grooved accent . You can clearly see how it was built up on the potters wheel both inside and out. The bottom is rough and unfinished and looks sliced right off the wheel. No marks or numbers so identifying this is a toughie. It has the clay color of Zanesville pottery but the bottom also looks similar to some of North Carolina's J. B. Cole pottery. There may have been a label or an ink stamp that has just worn away over the years. -Mike-

Thank you Ken and Karen....it's been a while since something rang that little bell in my head. Here's another case of " just about to leave "and spying this pushed to the back on a bottom shelf after a third sweep of the store.....half price too... of course. I've been deleting ancient posts of mundane things so I can save my 1oooth post spot. Still hunting for that spectacular piece ! It would have been so much easier if I had just won that 1.5 billion in the lottery last night...lol. :)

Great looking piece Mike! I love the blue and green, and the handles really dress it up!

Thanks Rick :) ....the pics really do not do it justice. In bright sunlight there's so much more variation and intensity to the colors. :)
