Very large. No interior tray. Number 4 is on the iron and written on the bottom of the trunk. Lock reads Corin cabinet lock Co. New Britain Conn. There is a Pat. I can make out July on the left side and May 18 on the right.
Just learning about these trunks. This is clearly the oldest one that I own. But I will post my others at a later time. I would like to know about the number 4 on the iron latches. And of the intended use to this trunk. And if anyone knows the maker. I welcome any information you may have to offer. Thank you this is my first post.

You have a lovely flat-top trunk from the 1880's. The number four on the latches refer to the size of the latch itself... I think they go up to six. All of the cast iron fingering and end slat clamps do shine up rather beautifully if you care to go that route -- I have a few examples of what they look like refinished on my site. As for the maker -- without a label hard to say. Many companies were making trunks and buying parts from parts companies. The hardware can be identified but that does not always indicate who made the trunk unless the hardware was specialized for the maker. (ex. Taylor trunks and Martin Maier) Your trunk has nice high quality hardware on it, and for a flat-top that's great! Looking forward to seeing your other trunks-- post away!

You are welcome! I would love to see what the top looks like (four pics per item never enough!) -- and the lithograph is fabulous on this one...
