This also was my Grandmother's, I call her Miss Amelia. Painted on canvas, and in her original frame. She was painted by her uncle - a guy named Murphy. (I forget his first name!) She is over 125 years old! She is very large - 3 x 5 FEET! She has a part of my entire life - she used to hang at the top of the stairs to my Grandmother's flat in San Francisco. Her sister lived in the lower flat.

According to the Antiques Roadshow - in their Seattle show of probably 8-10 years ago, (someone brought in one that was remarkably similar to mine, but not as beautiful!) these were commissioned by cities and municipalities and businesses.

Cities on the West Coast were being built at a rapid pace after the 1849 gold rush. City halls & other buildings had big, large wall spaces that needed art, and they would commission local artists to paint these! This beautiful woman was a common theme, and every artist did their own interpretation. Notice the Opium Poppies at her feet!

I cannot find the one on AR Archive! I could have sworn is was at Seattle - but doing a search of ALL Paintings, it does not show up!

Thank you all! She is a stunner. She's been in my life since I was born! Not quite life size - unless she is a Pocket Venus!

      Wow wow WOW!

      That's a marvel!

Poppies are symbolic for sleep, it seems your Amelia is a awakening beauty, stretching herself after a good night :-)

Great new profile pic, I bet Bb2 will visit repeatedly... ; -D

kyratango - Oh yeah! About the poppies! From the Wizard of Oz, too (NOW it makes sense!)! (And opium does put you to sleep!) I never made the symbolism connection before this moment - WOW. She seems even MORE beautiful now! Kind of like Venus Rising.

I always wondered about those poppies. I had a friend years ago, who has passed, and his Italian Nonna had Opium poppies in her backyard in Santa Rosa, CA, because she thought they were beautiful. (She taught me how to make Pesto!) That was in the early 1980s! Someone eventually stole them all out of her yard.

Ha, Celiene, I bet the person who stole the poppies had his own recipe for pesto, lol!
Glad to have enlighten Miss Amelia symbolism
