Does anyone have any idea what this is? At first I was thinking it was a box to view a magic lantern slide, but the hole seems too small. The dimensions are around 4 x 2.
The engraved picture on the inside lid, in the second photo, looks to be some devilish character.
I have no idea under which category this should be placed. I believe it's Victorian era, but please feel free to re-classify this.
Any thoughts on this piece will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
A belated thank you, blunderbuss2 and aura.
No idea...for a magic Trick? Something for those old wooden camera's?
What is the mark on it in the second pic --> Looks like a Splashing fish or something??
Thank you, SEAN68 and antiquerose. Antiquerose, I didn't think of it as being a fish, but you're right. It looks like some sort of sea creature. I thought of the camera idea, but I've still not been able to find anything remotely like it anywhere.
I was wondering IF this could have anything to do with these types of Camera ??

I was asked by @antiquerose if this might be a camera part. Though it looks somewhat like a plate holder or similar , it is not nor does it resemble something for use with an early camera or darkroom (i.e. a lens mounted filter holder). Regardless, it is interesting.
Thank you, antiquerose and rniederman. Your comments and interest are greatly appreciated. It remains a mystery!
