    Collectoma…
    (68 items)

In 1835 Mr. H.W. Brand retired from the Royal kitchen, and so began his commercial marketing of his "Essence of chicken" which he originally concocted for King George IV to boost his ailing health. H.W. Brand marketed his essence items for convalescents and invalids alike, and developed a wide range of products including; Essence of beef, Concentrated beef tea, Invalid turtle soup, Turtle jelly, Calf's-foot jelly, Beef tea jelly, Soups for invalids, Albuminious extract of beef, Mutton, veal and game broths. Potted chicken, ham, and partridge. Essence of malt, and Savory meat lozenges.
I'm not sure what this little 2" tall jar would have originally contained, or how to date it, but I'm sure it's contents made someone happy. There's not much online other than what I've transcripted here. It has a little indent around the top lip as though its top somehow sealed in there. I could barely make out the company emboss on the bottom, but was able to with a magnifier. I helped unload a few boxes of donations onto the shelves today at a thrift shop, and was given this for the asking. >I'm lucky to have recently found another Brand & Co. jar. This one is obviously a little taller, and has a little contents viewing window, or maybe where a label was affixed.<

Thanks Brunswick. I'm still doing some research on the item and just found this. Hey girls, are you down with some essence of prune? http://taklombrand.blogspot.ca/2010/06/backgroud-company.html

Interesting! Another time, but the poor turtles.
I wonder how they were sealed - maybe wax and fabric? Tin lids were around by then but generally to be pried off and not re-used.

Thanks racer4four and U2 vetraio50 for the loves. I just spent an hour on this fantastic website hoping to find a similar jar with a similar sealing feature. I got close, but no luck. Check out all the Illinois Glass Co. catalogs here if you get a chance. Each page has been photographed. Some items not available West of the Missippi though :) http://www.sha.org/bottle/typing.htm
