This postcard was postmarked twice (Brooklyn and San Francisco) in 1905.
The great Earthquake would hit in about a year, almost certainly destroying the post office and photographer's office.
What is interesting about this hand-tinted real-photo postcard is that the photographer-- Charles Weidner-- has captured another photographer who may also have just captured him.
This is Glacier Point in Yosemite Valley, California. The man on the peak is about 3,250 feet up. How brave!!
That gives me shivers ! I fly all the time but hate heights, like this & tall ladders. Strange, eh ? If I don't like what a pilot is doing, I'll take control in a heart beat!
*Loves heights.* LOL.
You fly aeroplanes?
Not as P.I.C. since they butterflied me in Martinique so they could play with my heart for awhile. I still fly right seat & on my Sunday Hash Brownie Tours . LOL! Strange that I don't think twice about making a landing in crosswinds on a short strip, but get shaky on a tall ladder.
Everyone has his quirks. :P
I just hope that your heart stays well.
The last guy I dated has a pilot's license for small aircraft. I cannot recall what he flew, though, as I'm more familiar with Piper for small aircraft.
Don't think you could get me to crawl out on that rock on hands & knees !! LOL!! I worked for a Piper dealer in the 60's, got my inspector's license & went solo until I realized there was no safe money in Aviation. Sold real estate to make enough to leave the States & never looked back. Just play in aviation now to keep me busy, off the streets & out of trouble ! Also makes a convincing story for how I live where I do !!
This guy seems quite happy to for the sake of a good picture (I'd be like him, I'm afraid.)
I have met plenty of former new/used car dealers, but never anyone who worked for an aircraft dealer. LOL.
You seem to have so many interesting stories. I love learning about people, even daily life, hence another reason I like used postcards (this one is fairly illegible, I'm afraid.)
I didn't mean to say there was "no safe money in aviation". Well, maybe I did !! LOL!! At the time, I meant to say that there wasn't big money in aviation.
Todd (my guy) just really loves flying.
When my mom and I moved to just 2 roads away from the airport, I was very happy. *Uses binoculars to try and ID planes in Spring, Summer, Fall.*
You are young ! I don't even bother to look hardly anymore. I do listen to the sound of the engines for possible trouble.
I was in a vintage "puddle hopper," as mom called it before we boarded.
It was a prop-driven medium-size aircraft with streaks of rust falling down like a brown water-fall. Its skin was no longer the shiny it should have been. It didn't look too old, but I'd guess 1980s. (Cheap ticket.... LOL.)
The flight was at night. After take off we encountered some good turbulence. A storm struck. Lightning flashed and thunder cracked.
The pilots took it up pretty high, heading up through the clouds as rain poured down to the city of Grand Rapids below.
But the plane was struck and lurched and dipped from impact or failure. The power went out. The engines sounded like they died although one lady's screaming made that hard to be sure of. (And only half the air-masks popped out.)
But it all came back on moments later, and they took it up out of and above the storm.
Seems like those engines can take a lot. *Likes them better than that of any vehicle we've ever owned.*
For seeing the plane, sounds like a nite flight was a good choice. Sounds like we keep out planes in better order. In the air, lightning should just pass thru without affecting anything. Have seen minor evidence of a major strike if the ground wires aren't good enough. Ho-hum! Mid-nite already ! A demain.
That they used harsh lighting upon it made it look uglier. They didn't even roll it up to a sleeve. They drove up steps for us to walk on in the light rain. It was like stepping back to before I was born. LOL.
I'd say it had major affects on this plane.
Hasta luego.
Great postcard but I think I will go to Visalia's antique row and skip Yosemite.
OK maybe I'll drive through it sometime. It is a beautiful place.
Wow. Very nice postcard. Probably my biggest dream destination is Yosemite Park - this posting reminded me my unfulfilled dream.
Fort Apache, you don't wanna come hike with me? :(
:P
Martika, take me with you!!!! LOL.
