Much as this vase/ashtray set is not my usual style, I still really love it.
It has an exotic and rich decor that I have never seen before.
It looks like a beautifully embroidered silk that would be used by a courtier or noble.

Made by Sanyu under their Fantasy Glass label it would date to about the 1960s.

I am fascinated by how they got this look.
Black glass has been blown with what I think are large blobs of mica or aventurine. It has then been liberally "sprinkled" with the same and lastly cased in a rich golden coloured glass. The golden case has made the minerals appear a beautiful deep gold.
The vase has been finished with a worked clear glass collar.

Of course this beautiful set came in it's bespoke box and appears to have never been used.
I sourced it from Japan, and in all of my searching and investigating of Japanese glass have never seen anything remotely like it.

Love it or hate it, it is attention seeking!

Hi Karen! Funny, when I saw this I thought to myself, hmmm, that doesn't seem like Karens' style, only to find that was the beginning of your first sentence!!!

It is a very nice set though and bet it grows on you. Seems like it's in the family of "you just have to see it". Do the gold specks sort of 'disappear' when you turn the vase? Miss you much!

I had to look at them again and I love their fancy logo sticker. And yes, they absolutely do look brand new.

Thanks Sue for the comments - missed you!
You know lots of Japanese glass has grown on me and now when others see some of my glass and don't get it I have a "huh?" moment before I remember it takes tiiiiiiime. I find a lot of other glass really boring after being assaulted by Japanese glass for a long tiiiiimmmme.
The gold specks do not disappear.
I'm glad you commented on the label? I really like it too.

They are beautiful, Karen, and such a stimulus to the imagination!

Interesting design...Almost like looking under a microscope at an invisible little universe teaming with life.

Thanks Peggy. My brain possibly looks like this!

and Mike.....exactly right! I may now call this decor "bacteria slide".
      What do you think?

      Karen,
I think these are very spectacular looking! Some very fine craftsmanship went into the making of these. Just fascinating.

      Hmmm.....Intergalactica perhaps

Thanks Scott. Yes, a lot of clever work here.

You have a great imagination Peggy but that works better.
Probably a nicer name than bacteria slide.....

I now know just what you mean. I have learned so much just from being here on this site. And honestly, with much of your collection, my eyes have opened to a whole new (old) world. pretty amazing.

Checking with a Japanese English translator Kuroi Kin Mushi. So black, gold, bugs or insects (bacteria). Kind of pleasant sounding. Not at all sure if it's arranged for proper Japanese grammar though..lol

Those are controlled bubbles i think.

Love them....also look like Murano Art glass. Good thing for labels !!!

      Thanks Sean!

Mike - that sounds heaps better. Ta.
    17. racer4four racer4four, 9 years ago
You could be correct there Tiger. The mica has sat around the bubbles. Thanks.

I think these were made about the same time as similar Murano - 50s/60s.
Thanks Rose - labels and boxes are a great help.

You always come up with something unique and beautiful Karen! I'm crazy about the gold against the black! The "seeds" remind me of the bubbles (which obviously these aren't) in some of Barbini's bullicante pieces. Wonderful!

Thanks Rick. I always appreciate your comments and the relationship with this Japanese glass to what the Muranese were doing.
