This is a Nippon sugar bowl and creamer. I believe it was made for the domestic market, in Japan. The top knob and handles were a pale green. This design and pattern would not have been attractive to the western market at the time of the turn of the century. The Japanese taste and American taste were quite different. Also, the backstamp is clearly written in Japanese. Is there anyone who can help me interpret these Japanese characters?

http://Www.gotheborg.com may have that marking. Lovely!

Beautiful set :)....this mark doesn't seem to be shown on Gotheborg's Japanese marks page as Robin suggested. It's a good resource too. I'm getting more of a Satsuma feel from these as well.

This is quite a brain teaser; but isn't that the fun of it? Thanks Robin, for the Gotheborg resource, and Mike...I'd agree, nothing there that would identify this mark. I'm beginning to wonder if it's an artist signature. And your right, it does have a Satsuma feel to it. Later, I'll post a Satsuma vase, which I did have success in identifying the mark on Gotheborg.
