Here's a couple of nice porcelain pieces from Salvation's half price day sale. They are both Japanese Kutani but quite different. The little saucer has a generic Kutani mark that dates to 1930. Nice decoration and figures and was probably part of a set. The little lotus shaped rice bowl is the typical Kutani orange -red color with a gilt bamboo design. The mark on this piece is a mystery as well as the date. It wasn't on Gotheborg's site. Kutani marks are notoriously vague and hard to pin down according to Gotheborg. Bad handwriting and a multitude of characters to interpret make it hard even for the Japanese to read them. The orange-red colors with gilt designs however are unmistakable. -Mike-
Very nice Mike and you know your stuff.
My local op shop has a half price sale every 3 months or so but anything this good is long gone. All they seem to have left for their sales are pieces that no-one, not even a muralist, would want!
Thanks Karen...people usually pass over Asian porcelain for some reason. It's just not that popular anymore....too Granny for the younger crowd I guess. That's why it gets donated. So it will just sit...until Grandpa Mike comes along..lol. :)
Mike you just know your $h!+. ;) Lucky you!! I think it's beautiful but with such little space in my hut, and absolutely no knowledge, I have to pass it by.:(
Hopefully Grandpa gets a great return one day.
lol...thank you OGF :)
