Great trunk. Its a post 1873 , and probably before 1880, barrel stave top, with slats running lengthwise, American made travel trunk. Barrel stave top refers to the construction of the box top, not the direction of the 5 slats on top. If the slats were running front to back it would still be a barrel stave top trunk with a cross slat design. It is a leather covered trunk with iron bound corners that are double row nailed. The 1873 patent latches were patented by J. Arnold on July 1st 1873, and the patent # is 140,338. The interior is complete with a covered parasol box, covered glove tray, and covered hat box. (missing cover) The fall-in compartment in the lid is complete (usually the door is missing) with optional envelope. I really like the anchor design handle end caps, and you don't see these as often as other styles. However, the mean nothing, and the anchor is simply a design. No makers label, so we do not know who made it. What is the brass tag on the end of the trunk? Is it a makers name, or owners name?
