The following from AskArt:
Anton Gutknecht was born in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1907 and died in 1988. He studied in Dusseldorf, Munich, and Hamburg, and instructed for many years at Vienna's Royal Academy before moving to southern California where he settled in Palm Springs.
Gutknecht has traveled extensively over the world, painting a wide variety of subjects. His works have won prizes in international competitions in Vienna, Paris, Rome, Naples, and Venice. His paintings are a mixture of realism with an idealistic beauty. Some of his Southern California scenes were reproduced as commercial prints.
A 1980 book published by Foster Art Books titled "Painting Landscapes and Seascapes" by Anton Gutknecht" brought him recognition in the United States.
On the back of the frame is a label that reads: H. Waber & Co Erlangen Helmstr. 9 Bavaria. 31X25 including frame.
I assume that this was painted in Europe before the artist moved to California since it was framed in Bavaria
Mudwoman, Yes, The photos do not do this painting justice. Thank you for your comment!
Mudwoman, The photos make it look faded and the streak of light is no where near as dramatic. I was happy that this appears to be one of his earlier paintings in Germany. I like it much better than his later paintings. It was the streak of light that drew me to it.
Mudwoman, Thanks for validating that my choice of this painting was a good one. I found it in a new shop in the area hidden behind a lot of stuff.
this is very beautiful! it's an original print, right?
ho2cultcha, Thank you for the nice comment ! It is not a print. It is an original painting.
