Local treasure I found in Blanco, Texas in an antique store basement. The store owner could only tell me that it came from a large ranch from here in the Hill Country. It is in rough condition, but the minute I saw it I fell in love with it's character and the detailing on it - and it looks smashing in my Mexican style hacienda Hill Country home! It has embossed metal with little animal type critters on it. There is also a masonry type coating on the lighter areas you see in the photos. I thought it was incredibly unique and I have never seen anything like it before. The two latches on either end latch by turning the bottom piece which moves 360 degrees. The center, or middle latch is missing. I would love to find a replacement latch that the trunk would have originally had and somehow put it on. It measures 4 feet and 1/2 inch long, 18 inches tall, and 16 and 1/2 inches wide. The top is domed. The inside has rough hewed wood. Any information from the trunk experts would be greatly appreciated!

Interesting piece -- certainly has a lovely form. Not entirely sure that it is an antique though. What kind of material are the center panels made of? Could you post a picture of the interior -- that would help us get a handle on age.

Were there bones in it?lol. That is an interesting trunk. I'm with trunkman, it has the antique look but also signs that it was just made to look old.

Thank you Trunkman for your expertise and comments! I posted more photos for you - see "Mystery Trunk Hill Country Texas Part 2" under Show and Tell and Unsolved Myteries.

AzTom - Lol! Your "bones" comment is very similar to what my son said to me when he saw the trunk!
Kind of creepy! I keep thinking maybe it was in a barn and someone kept tack and supplies for horses????? Hopefully someone will be able to give me some sort of background on this piece or one like it. I have that trunk in my dining area and I still adore it each time I walk by and it catches my eye!
