The kids and I found this old ale bottle in a local creek buried under sand and I was wondering how old it might be. I checked all the web sites I could find but found no matching manufacturer. Not all of the stamp lettering is legible as it appears to have been a bit of a bodgey job by whoever stamped it. The main part of the stamp says :

    SUPERIOR STONE WARE
    AND
    WARRANTED NOT TO ABSORB
    JAR AND BOTTLE MANUFACTORY
    -------------(smugded) DERBYSHIRE

If anyone has a rough idea that would be great.

The illegible word at the end is probably Shipley.

Shipley Pottery, Derbyshire, in operation roughly 1825 - 1840.

From the shape it's probably a ginger beer bottle, but could have been used for any number of purposes, from veterinary medicines to varnish to beer.

      Jerry,

Thanks very much. I hadn't been able to work out what that word was. Nor had I seen any stamp like it. Now that I have examined the bottle a little closer I think I can make out the initials "JB." or "JR." above the stamp. That age range is pretty cool as the settlement of Parramatta, Australia was not until the very late 1700s. Thanks for your help!
