This handbill version of a 1966 Family Dog poster by the great Victor Moscoso has been on my must-have list for many, many years. In the rock-poster community, this poster is known as 'Hippie Santa Claus' but the horns give this Santa a decidedly devilish appearance.

The concerts took place on December 23 and 24, 1966, at San Francisco's Avalon Ballroom. The Grateful Dead headlined, with the "Steve Miller Blues Band" as the second-bill act (this was before Boz Scaggs was in the band). Moby Grape opened.

There are a few versions of this handbill. Mine is the original on thin 8.5 x 11 inch paper. One version has printing on the back and was bound into a magazine of the day called Mojo Navigator. Others were printed as they ran out of red ink, which means the red is either faded or absent. On this beauty, the colors are nice and bright.

Wow I see they only printed this once before the concert. There is a quote there from the artist. Did you see what they are going for now?

Hi Vestaswind. Yes, the reason why I like this poster so much (other than the artwork and list of bands) is that unlike other Family Dog and Bill Graham posters from the late 1960s, it's easy to keep track of the versions on this one because there were so few. No reprints of the poster at all, no postcards, and only a few easy-to-spot variations of the handbill. As for price, no one I know would pay that much; certainly I could not afford to... ;-)

I have never heard of Steve Miller being a blues band before :p You have your copy so you never have to! It's a great piece.
