So I bought a whole slew of these hairpipe bone pieces from a guy at the swap meet on Sunday. A strange mix of pieces, I have two more and another piece I will post in a separate thread. I also left two behind due to damage. They are def bone, have striations on the ends and some have pindots and striations on the outer surface. Some are smooth as ivory, some slightly rough, some carved. If I had to guess, I'd say these came from a collector who got them from all over the globe. Perhaps someone among you can ID them? Thanks for looking.
With the cowrie shell in pic 1, was thinking exotic origin, and with the leather (?) Cords hippie look! :-)
Thanks for the love, brunswick, and mikelv85. :)
kyratango, I was wondering if they weren't Indian or African. There's one with an elephant carved on the central bead. I've no clue on these!!
I had no idea these shape bone beads were called hairpipe. I love learning! Thanks.
I can't help in any way here except admire.
I do know this style was very popular in the late 60's early 70's...but most had barrel clasps. This style did come back, as does most everything it seems, in the late 90's into the 2000's.
Looks native Influenced. In the 1970's the white beaded types were more single strands type of shells weren't they?? As I still have might from then and it was a single strand.....where the leather chokers were like a inch wide.....So that is why I am thinking more native work......???....just my Opinion
Thanks for the love, aura, vetraio50, and shareurpassion. :)
Karen, in the Native American culture, they are known as hairpipe, however, as I have researched, I think these are possibly Indonesian, in which case these are called bone tube beads, I believe.
Share, these do have more of a retro look than contemporary or vintage, I would guess them at 90s or aughts, as you suggest. :)
Rose, yes, native or tribal is what I lean toward as well, as I said to Karen, it is likely they are Indonesian made. Thanks for looking and your thoughts. :)
Horn tube beads, or bone tube beads. :)
