    LOUMANAL
    (436 items)

We have this large and heavy figurine, possibly Murano Glass that we are trying to figure out what he represents. Is he a Peasant in costume, a Clown, a Polichinelle?..... He is so different that we have been unable to find anyone/anything similar. He measures 11" tall by 8" across and other than for his red stripes on his frilly shirt, he is all made of Opalescent glass and gold aventurine. Any Murano glass experts out there? There is a partial store sticker indicating "The J.L.H***EN Co." and he looks old with a lot of wear underneath. He weighs over 5 pounds. Anyone know this fellow? My photos were taken at night with a flash.

Actually Lou, it does remind me of a few characters on this Rock, but not any friends ! Most of our court jesters & clowns hold political office here ! (Kind of like in the States !) LOL !!

My friends are from all over the world & they say that these elections have turned into "a carnival". Don't they always ?!! I have absolutely no idea who to vote for. I don't think any one of them deserve my vote or even my attention ! Politics are covered ! Shall we move to religion ? (Hope not !)

Oh no, Bb2 doesn't have such a big... nose! ;-D

I think it is Cyrano de Bergerac, a character from a theatre piece by Edmond Rostand!
    10. LOUMANAL LOUMANAL, 9 years ago
Cyrano de Bergerac.....yes, with the big nose...quite a possibility. I have added new photos in daylight to see more details and also a photo of the label. RER(BOB)

Love it and your new clearer pics!
      His froufrous are charming :-D

Maybe the kind of "gourd" at his belt is part of a sword, which blade is now lacking?
    12. LOUMANAL LOUMANAL, 9 years ago
No, I think he imbibs a little from his expression and his gourd holds his Amareto. lol Thanks kyratango

I wonder if that label is from ??? The J. L Hudson Co. in Michigan ?? As sounds like they were a very big store and bought in Quality items.

      http://www.thedepartmentstoremuseum.org/2010/05/j-l-hudson-co-detroit-michigan.html

""Founded in 1963 by Joseph L. Hudson, the president of the Detroit based J. L. Hudson Company, who had an interest in bringing art of top quality to Detroit. ""

Also not sure BUT he reminds of of some Czech Glass Figurines too ( Zelezny Brod) , like these, scroll down near the bottom:

      http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Zelesny-Brod-School-of-Czech-Art-Glass-Figurine-Doctor-or-Scientist-/151983147714?nma=true&si=itCWWYVlZOqlxS4BFsWIOnQQbC8%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

.....Could be Murano -- as I am Clueless on this one !!!

Hi antiquerose! Thank you for this information and your comments. I was reading up on the J.L. Hudson store and it could very well be that they retailed this glass figurine. From what I read, they sold beautiful things and the label on my figurine could be their tag. I read that the company was actually started in 1886 and their first department store in Detroit was built in 1911. The company had stores in other cities but the main store in Detroit closed in the 1980's. The building was taken down not long after.
The Zelezny Brod figurines that I have seen are not opalescent like the one I posted and do not have that Gold wash on them so I don't think that it's by them. The opalescent glass in my figurine especially the powder blue color is often seen in Murano items.
Again, I appreciate your comments. Bob

Oh the thing above was from the net about something else the quote as I only copied part of it:

Founded in 1963 by Joseph L. Hudson [.....something else he started in 1963.....], the president of the Detroit based J. L. Hudson Company [...... this company started in 1886......], who had an interest in bringing art of top quality to Detroit

I did not mean J.L. was founded in 1963, as it was just part of a quote....I wanted the part about the High Quality stuff they bought in to the original store.

@LOUMANAL -- It does have aventurine? I could not see it . May well be Murano then....I am leaning towards a name here but I have to check first...

Kyra's mention of the gourd maybe being symbolic of a sword triggered a synapse ! (Problem is, it takes more than one). Isn't this character in some old play ?
    21. LOUMANAL LOUMANAL, 8 years ago
Have not come across another one of these..... the Cyrano de Bergerac designation seems correct! Bob
    22. apostata apostata, 4 years ago
i don,t known but the headgear is a cappello a punta, so i don,t think it is a Bergerac, maybe vetraio 50 ,knows he is the expert on this, and its also not coming from the comedia dell arte figures , only steep headgear coming from that
