Circa 1900, attributed to fine trunk maker Ernst Lange of Dresden Germany. True steamship size low profile trunk at 13" height x 23" x 36". Flat top with wood slats, all brass hardware, canvas covered wood box with zinc lining on underside, rawhide and leather trimmings. Interior lined in ticking fabric. All original undisturbed finish. Traditional European double locks, no key. Owner's name "Strack" painted on both ends.
Possibly linked to a 19o4 incident and subsequent legal proceeding between Mr. Strack and Austin Friars Steamship company regarding lost wages when the steamship Cheltenham, carrying contraband railroad supplies to Asia, was confiscated as a prize by a Russian ship.
