This is todays charity shop find. Browsing in the charity shops is a relax for me and now I look out for jewellery too - thanks to you, dear CW members :) I caught this bug. I like the filigree work.
I took this beauty home for a £1. It has some marks - 917, I looked it up and it means 22 kt gold. I saw on the net very similar silver brooches with gold wash. I wonder it might mean it is just gold plated. There are other marks too - F and maltese cross mark - this all on one side of the pin and on other side are the letter EA. The information what I found about these marks are bit confusing to me. I would be grateful if somebody would give me some info about it.
Thank you Thomas for a speedy love click :)
This is one of the nicest filigree butterflies I have seen Martika. I really love the bulbous thorax and the textured abdomen.
Great find.
Ok. This piece looks like Bezalel work-- I have a very old brooch from Palestine, the wprk looks similar.
What a super terrific butterfly filigree brooch, wow! Some of the jewelry folk may have information to offer, but in my opinion, you did really well! Thanks for sharing! :)
Filigree jewelry of 917 silver is made in Portugal.
Thank you Karen, Emme, Katherine, Davyd286, Nevada, Mike, Aura and Efesgirl for your infos/nice comments/love click xoxo
I looked it up again and I learned it can be old silver brooch from Malta.
Lol, it dashed my hopes about 22 kt gold brooch. But still very happy about it :)
Hi Martika, search for palestine silver filigre brooch, I have seen similar to your butterfly in that search as I have apin quite like that-- 1940's from a family friend who traveled there. Yours may be older judging from the clasp.
What a great item.....the butterfly is such a symbol of the art decor and nouveau period.
The detail on this one is lovely. The shaping and design of the piece are lovely .
Hi, Emme. I looked it up, the work is very alike to those produced in Palestine. It looks these butterflies were made in other parts of the world too. Mine bears the Maltese cross hallmark, found some similar on the net with the same 917 mark, with the description stating these are from Malta. I guess the EA mark has to be the makers mark. Anyway thank you for your comment, same to Nutsabotas, AnneLanders and all of you who stopped by :)
Well, it is a beautiful pin.
Thank you girls, Emme and Jeffbanks for your interest and love xxx
I can only say, good job for starting out with what they say. You could probably pick put the Hope Diamond too without a loupe. :)
OneGoodFind - I wish!!! Thank you, but it is Bonnie and Junkman who are the real experts in finding real treasure amongst the junk. I love browsing, and usually find wonderful things, but often these things are wonderful only to me. Of course, this brooch was a very good bargain for £1.
Nice brooch martika, I just posted one the other day, looks similar.
Very good buy! :^)
Thank you, Bill!!! Yours too !!! :)
