This is a very large trunk. Cannot find any dates on it. Has wheels, very small ones, all 4 corners... leather used to cover it. I am pretty sure that is the decaying stuff... inside is a pretty lithograph and compartments up top... Would love to know the age and make. I am thinking this was a bridal trunk... any ideas??? Dimensions are 30 x 19 x 24 high...
Upon a closer look. It seems like it is stamped on edge pieces PAT OCT 77...
Sometimes marks can be found on the latch.
Thanks! I've looked... but, there.is nothing obvious there... One new detail I discovered today in brighter light is that the decaying leather actually has patterns scribed into it... one of which looks like a bunch of straight lines, all on different angles, but all sharing same midpoint... in essence, it looks like a starburst... wish I could get more pictures on here. Would love to show others. Who knew the trunk makers. would go so far as to decorate the leather!?!!??!!! Can't wait to learn more!!! Thanks for helping, sharing your knowledge with me!!! ; )
Hello, your trunk was probably made very late 187o's to early 1880's because of the top slats running from side to side rather then front to back which became popular in the mid 80's. the leather on your trunk was embossed leather which had many different design's squares sun burst ect. The leather handle end caps with the star was used a lot by Martin Maier possibly of his design, I have Martin Maier trunks with the same corner hardware dated 1877 again possibly his design. I would cut off all the leather clean with murphy's oil soap give it a light sanding and stain a color of your choice and clear coat it, it's a beautiful trunk.
