    Hello everyone.

This is probably the most favourite piece from the silver collection....bought about 8 years ago for a really good price as it was listed in the wrong category!!

It is a ladies vinaigrette, which would have held a sponge or such under the gilt grill, soaked in some kind of aromatic mixture and held to the nose so that the smells of the street sewers etc did not assault the senses of the gentlewomen of the time!!

I think I would have been more worried about my shoes and hem of my gown getting dirty lol!!! oh I forgot....the lady's maid would have taken care of that.......

This vinaigrette is fully hallmarked for Birmingham assay office(anchor), sterling silver(lion), date letter(K?) and maker(JW) Joseph Willmore mark used 1823-43. Also has the duty mark for the monarch of the day. It is really tiny measuring 3cm x 2cm x 1cm and is in wonderful condition. If the date letter is K it would date to 1833.

Update: the date letter is L for 1834 with thanks to IVAN49.

      Hi,
More likely date letter ``L`` (continuous horizontal bottom line) but not much difference. Everything fits in.
