Very rare insight into the life of a boy in 1913. A street car, ice cream, and the vista from his room as he sits at his window one morning to write this (on his window) to friends in the town near me called Grand Haven.
"Moundsville
"W. Va.
"July 19, 1913.
"Dear Lawrence & Nettie.
"The street car is stopped in front of our house. I am writing this on the window and I can not write very good. There were some boys down on the corner yesterday selling ice cream and pop.
"Right across the street you can get two cones [last word then crossed out] ice cream cones for a nickel. We live about half a [last two words repeated and crossed out the second time] block from the post office as it makes it easy for us, we can go whenever we like. There is a mound here that the indians made. It is the biggest mound in the world.
I can see it now when I look out of the window. I can see big hills. But they are in Ohio. The Ohio river separates West Virginia and Ohio.
"Herbert was sick last night. I hope you are well.
"Yours truly,
"Little Homer."
I wish more letters like this had survived. I rarely get to, outside of books and magazines that just aren't the same, read things longer than a postcard from people in this time. Never do I get such an insight, though, as to the writer's view and exact location within where he is writing.
The postmark is the same day, at 11 a.m. So he wrote it before 11 a.m., likely writing it then running to mail it.
This is an incredible piece to me, and it is complete with its original envelope. If only we knew who he was and what happened to him.
Great Letter. Having an Ice Cream Shoppe I can relate!!! 2 cones for a nickle.
Cost a bit more now!!! I have a lot of Postcards.Enjoy reading them!!
Oh boy, how did you even find this post? LOL.
Thanks for visiting.
