U.S. sailor writing to sister in 1918:

"aug 25/18 Well Sis. am on my way at last, on the U.S.S. Bat[?]an, I don't know where we are bound. Suppose you read my letter by this time. With love, Carl."

As a note of interest, it was post-marked at 1 a.m. I also wonder why the lady is stepping off the ramp from the battle ship, not the man.

Can anyone ID the ship? I keep coming up with a modern assault ship, the U.S.S. Bataan.

"U.S.S. BATGAN" is what I make out. [;>)

Literally the only reference that pops up for the U.S.S. Batgan:

"Son of Nels and Emma Christophersen - Menominee
Born Mar. 24, 1900. Enlisted July 6, 1918, Milwaukee. To Great Lakes as wireless operator......Assigned to U. S. S. Batgan, and U. S. S. Southard. Over-seas twice with Merchant Marines. Still in service."

      From a 1921 reference:

      A Michigan ref. no less.

You asked why she was stepping off the battleship:)

      Ah, yes. Possibly.
