looks like Hawaiian koa wood.
Yeah - I was going to say Koa Poi bowl. The flared shape is unusual, though, and it's rather thick. And those are not Naive repairs (They use butterflies). The decoration is definitely Polynesian, IMO.
iansssss - post in the second category of Hawaiiana.
Now that I look closer - I'm not so sure. Koa wood (calabash) has much more 'character', more beauty and is not black. The bottom of this is too round, too.
The decoration STILL looks polynesian to me, however. Oh - and I meant those are not NATIVE repairs, not naive! This looks like it was used over fire, blackening the exterior. And the exterior is not smooth enough or polished, as a koa poi bowl would be.

Reminds me of a smaller wood bowl that I have shared on CW. Is there any metal spikes in bowl or might have fallen out?
