Has anyone ever seen a piece of cloisonné like this before??... I found it at a mall today, and paid more than usual, only after finding one on a gallery page by (maybe) the same designer for a jaw-droppingly high asking price. I've never, *ever* seen anything like it. It reminds me of Jean Dunand's work. What the heck is this???
SIZE? Checker Box, Mah Jong pieces box?? Wonderful!!
Does it have drawers or compartments in it...What is the size?-It seems pretty high for the base size, so I was thinking drawers?? Can you tell us about the inside?
No drawers or compartments, just a blue enamel inside
I actually did find one sort of like it on 1stDibs, but it was "unavailable"
The other one they were asking $4,850, it was like 2 inches bigger and not as "we'll executed" if I may say so
It's 4.75 x 3.25 x 2.5 tall
Very interesting! Style seems almost Dadist. Hope you get some clues.
What info was on the similar one you found?
Awsome find !! I love it !
I have a pic of a similar box, with it's signed paper label still affixed - artist name appears to be signed "Taila," made in China. A cigarette humidor, originally lined in wood, possibly part of a smoking set with a small dish for an ashtray and possibly a matching metal matchbox cover.
Other pieces seem to show a strange combination of either Aztec or Egyptian themes - monkey, panthers, crocodiles, birds, strange little gnomes - all with a sort of surreal hieroglyphic look.
Definitely an artist who was trying to be chic and trendy during the 1920s-30s, wouldn't you say? Guessing the artist drew the designs, and some Chinese cloisonne workshop executed them.
A cool find!
Here's a link to Liveauctioneers with the piece similar to yours (only with a yellow background) and the label I mentioned in prior post:
